Free Picnic In The Park this Sunday

To mark the 150 Year anniversary of football in Queensland, AFL Queensland is hosting a picnic this Sunday, July 3, at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens this Sunday, site of the first game of Australian Football in 1866.

AFL Queensland CEO Dean Warren has extended an open invitation to what is shaping up as the birthday event of the year.

“We are inviting all Queenslanders to roll out the picnic rugs and join us for a relaxing day in the gardens with family and friends,” Warren said.

“This is a really special occasion for us. Australian Football has been a part of Queensland for 150 years and we want to share our celebrations with as many people as possible.”

Picnic in the Park guests will enjoy live music, historical displays, snow-cones and donuts, along with the AFL Inflatable Playground, face painting and balloon twisting for the kids.

A feature of the day will be The World’s Biggest Junior Clinic; with up to 500 children expected to participate across four, free sessions.

“For many Queenslanders, the first experience of Australian Football is through a NAB AFL Auskick or school clinic and we wanted to make that a feature of our birthday celebrations,” said Warren.

“Along with celebrating a really proud history, this event is about looking forward to the future and our next generation of footy players, volunteers, officials and fans.”

The Picnic in the Park is part of the AFLQ 150 year celebrations which is supported by the Queensland Government.
