The 2012 Under 16 State Academy Championships will be held over 4 days commencing this Sunday April 29.
Matches will be played at the AFL Queensland Administration and Training Centre in Cansdale St, Yeronga and O’Callaghan Park, Zillmere.
The eight teams competing in the championships are the Country Kookaburras (comprising players from Cape York, Cairns, Palm Island, Townsville, Mackay and Capricornia), Gold Coast North, Gold Coast South, Northern Raiders (Brisbane North), Suncoast Power (Sunshine Coast), South East Bushrangers (Brisbane South), Western Taipans (Brisbane West) and the PNG Binatangs (Papua New Guinea).
State Talent Manager for AFL Queensland Bob Batty said that the carnival played an important role in nurturing Queensland’s talented young footballers.
“The championships showcase player development and prepare the boys for the next stage in the talented player pathway,” said Batty
“Young players such as Alex Sexton and Alik Magin (Gold Coast SUNS), Peter Yagmoor and Josh Thomas (Collingwood), Bryce Retzlaff and Claye Beams (Brisbane Lions) all cut their teeth in the U16 Queensland State Academy Championships and now find themselves on AFL lists.
The Queensland Young Scorpion State Under 16 squad will be chosen at the completion of the carnival and will go on to play in the Under 16 National Championships later this year.
