In its essence, the fixture provides all nine QAFL clubs, along with their players and supporters, an enhanced football experience through a plethora of marquee fixtures.
In all, teams will play 16 games across the 20 round season, which commences on the Easter long weekend with the traditional Good Friday fixture at McCarthy Homes Oval between the rebranded Sherwood Magpies and Wilston Grange.
With seven teams enjoying the bye in Round 1, the second week of the season provides the first opportunity to see a full slate of games, headlined by the Grand Final rematch between Palm Beach Currumbin and Surfers Paradise at Salk Oval.
Competition Manager – QAFL and Colts, Matt Bialkowski, said he hopes the 2020 fixture will continue on from an exciting and competitive 2019.
“Last year was our most competitive season yet, and with the introduction of Maroochydore for 2020, we will see a very dynamic competition take shape.,” Bialkowski said.
“Making the top five at the business end of the season will not be an easy feat for any club this year, and our finals will certainly showcase some entertaining football.”
Elsewhere, ANZAC Round will once again play a significant part in the QAFL calendar with a plethora of clubs commemorating an important National day.
Following Sandgate’s recent withdrawal from the competition, Wilston Grange will host Morningside in the ANZAC Day-eve showdown on Friday night in Round 3.
Other ANZAC Round blockbusters include Surfers Paradise unfurling their 2019 Premiership Flag in front of their loyal fans during their first home game of the 2020 season, when they host traditional rivals Labrador at Sir Bruce Small Park.
Maroochydore will play their first home game since entering the premier competition, when they host Broadbeach at the Maroochydore Multisport Complex.
Round 5 sees Mt Gravatt host Sherwood in a QAFL-NEAFL double header at Dittmer Park; coinciding with the Round 6 showdown between Redland and Gold Coast. Similarly, Maroochydore and Labrador will face off on the Sunshine Coast in Round 10 following the Round 11 NEAFL clash between Brisbane and the GIANTS.
Other marquee fixtures throughout the season include the Round 12 QAFL – Bond University QAFLW double-header between Maroochydore and Wilston Grange and Ferg Reid Day at Dittmer Park in Round 17 between Mt Gravatt and Morningside.
Across the 72-game season, marquee rounds will continue to be supported by our QAFL clubs and community. ANZAC Round, Sir Doug Nicholls Round and Umpire Appreciation Round will all feature prominently once again while the QAFL will also celebrate Pride Round for the first time across Round 10.
Mr Bialkowski said the support of QAFL clubs across marquee rounds continues to enhance the significance of these games.
“It is always fantastic to see the support our QAFL clubs have for our marquee rounds and the level of significance they place on them. It really brings the community feeling into our football competition,” he said.
A competition-wide bye will occur between Rounds 8 and 9, with the QAFL representative side hosting the Victoria Amateur Football Association (VAFA) at Hickey Park on Sunday June 7. The will be preceded by the Bond University QAFLW match between Wilston Grange and Coolangatta.
A five-team finals’ structure will commence following the home and away season and will culminate with the Grand Final scheduled for Saturday, September 19.
