Queensland sports fans can look forward to a feast of football during the Queen’s Birthday weekend with the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex set to host four representative clashes this Sunday June 7.
North Queensland will take on South Queensland, Queensland will meet Victoria Metro, the NEAFL will take on the Tasmania State League and the Queensland Women’s team will play ta Tasmanian Representative side.
The day kicks off with North Queensland – comprising players from Cairns, Capricornia, Mackay, Mount Isa and Townsville – taking on the best players from the QFA, QAFA, Darling Downs and Wide Bay leagues in a repeat of last year’s match.
“South Queensland will be looking to redeem itself after a narrow loss last year,” said AFL Queensland Football Operations Manager Craig Millar.
Game two sees Queensland take on Victoria Metro, a clash Millar says will test the home side.
“To take on Vic Metro – which comprises all metropolitan based competitions in Melbourne – is a huge challenge for our Queensland team, but one that we look forward too,” he said.
“Any player playing in a competition within Queensland, including the NEAFL is eligible to play for Queensland which should make for a strong state side.”
Another team out for redemption will be the NEAFL, who went down to Tasmania 8.13.61 to 15.11 (101) when they met on the Apple Isle last year.
The Queensland Women’s team fared better in 2014, beating the Tasmanians comfortably in an historic match.
“The Women’s team played in the first ever open-age state game last year, against Tasmania,” said Millar.
“This was a monumental occasion for women’s football and we look forward to another great game against the passionate Tassie team.”
AFL Queensland Chief Executive Officer Michael Conlan said the day provided fans with a unique opportunity to see the best of Queensland football.
“Four great games on the one day, in one location, is a first for representative football in Queensland,” said Conlan.
“It will be a fantastic occasion and one we encourage all football fans to show their state pride by turning out and supporting the very best of Queensland talent.”
All matches will be held at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex, Aquatic Drive, Burpengary.
