40 years since they made history, QLD schoolboys gather on the Gold Coast

FLASHBACK:

It’s July 1984 and Queensland has made history….winning the national under-16 school Australian Rules Football Championships in Sydney and going through the tournament undefeated. The first Queensland side to take national honours in a schoolboys championships.

Queensland completed their unbeaten series with a 13-13 (91) to 8-10 (58) win over Western Australia, which followed wins over Northern Territory (20 points), Victoria (nine points), Tasmania (41 points), South Austalia (two points), ACT (36 points) and New South Wales.

Five Oueenslanders made the honorary Australian side; Gavin Crosisca, John Bell, Tony Lynn, Jeff Ebert and Paul Mazzioletti. But the awards didn’t stop there.

Crosisca, who’d go on to play for Collingwood, won the best and fairest award, whilst former Brisbane Bear and Carlton player Lynn was runner up. Bell was named most consistent player while the most improved player award went to Ebert.

The group came together on the Gold Coast on the weekend to celebrate 40 years since their historic triumph.

20 of the 25 man squad attended, together with coach Rob Amos and Manager Peter Roberts.
