Pink Sherrin footballs were the fashion item of choice as AFLQ development officers and GCFC players spent a day at Somerset College doing its part to help grow female participation in AFL football last week.

Some terrific coverage on the NBN/Nine News and in The Gold Coast Bulletin capped an outstanding promotion.

The AFL’s marketing department cites figures from Morgan Research showing 50 per cent of AFL supporters are female. And of the attendances at AFL games every weekend, about 45 per cent are female.

Seven-year-olds Majaya Defilippis, Emma McTaggart and Emma Lekich were three of about 50 girls who spent the afternoon learning how to kick and handball at an all-girls Auskick clinic held at the school.

GCFC young gun Luke Shreeve was happy to help and said it was a good initiative for the club to be a part of.

“It’s great to have girls participating and that’s what today is all about,” said the former Oxenford State Primary School student, who took up the sport aged eight.

Auskick now has 160,000-plus boys and girls participating each year Australia-wide and 5000 participants on the Gold Coast take part in the program each year.

GCFC community programs officer Corey Bell said the club was thrilled to be able to throw its support behind female participation.

“The club has had a real focus on women in the past month with our involvements with the Mother’s Day Classic, involvement with Auskick here and later in the month we

will do some things around domestic violence awareness,” Bell said.
