The Australia Post Young Scorpions opened the NAB Australian U16 Championships in blistering fashion with a 70-point win over NSW/ACT at Blacktown Stadium, Sydney, today.

The Scorpions came from one point down at quarter-time completely dominate the home side in what coach Ray Windsor described as “a really outstanding team performance”.

They kicked five goals in each of the first three goals and four in the last to win 19-14-128 to 8-10-58.

NSW kicked just one goal in the middle two quarters and the two goals late in the final stanza as the super-slick Queenslanders looked every bit the quality group insiders had expected.

“We were a bit slow to start but when we got going the boys really rose to the challenge.”

Half forward Alex Sexton, from Springwood, was judged the Scorpions’ best with 21 possessions, seven marks and three goals at half forward.

“He was outstanding – he just runs so hard,” said Windsor, who was in charge of the side for the first time after two years as assistant-coach to David Ashkar.

Next best were midfielders Andrew Boston from Broadbeach and vice-captain Tom Overington from Sandgate. Each had 35 possessions.

Full forward Shaun Crook, from Aspley, gave the Queenslanders something to kick to up forward, finishing with seven goals. And according to Windsor, he should have had nine because he missed two sitters in the final term.

Jock Oates from Morningside at full back was a tower of strength, clubmate Brian Coleman-Broom provided a lot of dash from the back pocket until he did his hamstring midway through the final quarter, and skipper James Ives, from Aspley, was every dangerous up forward and through the midfield.

Sadly, Coleman-Broom is unlikely to play again in the carnival.

Also facing an anxious wait is Sandgate’s Ty Morrisey, who was reported for alleged forceful head high contact in the final quarter. According to team officials, he will plead not guilty when he faces the carnival tribunal Monday morning.

In other division two games today, Tasmania beat the Northern Territory by three goals, and South Pacific beat the World XVIII by 32 points.

Queensland will play South Pacific on Wednesday, when Tasmania will play the World XVIII.

So, if both games go according to the seedings, Queensland are on track to meet Tasmania for the title next Saturday.
