The Cape York community can keep kicking goals with the official opening of their upgraded oval in Cairns today.
Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt officially opened the newly upgraded Cape York AFL field, which the Queensland Government contributed almost $52,000 towards.
“This upgrade project was completed to help support the Australian Football Women’s League, as well as other local clubs in Cairns,” Mr Pitt said.
“The oval is now at competition standard and will increase this facility’s capacity to cater for competitions, practice and training camps.”
Member for Cairns Rob Pyne said the oval upgrade was a great outcome for the local community.
“I want to congratulate AFL Cape York on their great work to make the upgraded oval a reality,” Mr Pyne said.
Sport and Racing Minister Bill Byrne said the funding for the upgrade had been provided through the State Government’s Get Playing program.
“This is a great initiative which supports grassroots sport and recreation,” Mr Byrne said.
“The club has also been approved for an additional $425,000 through the government’s Get Playing Plus program for a new undercover court and ancillary facilities, including two change rooms, gymnasium and canteen.”
