AFL Capricornia has released season fixtures for 2024, with all clubs returning to the field on Saturday April 13.
Six clubs will feature this season, in the Yeppoon Swans, BITS Saints, Gladstone Suns, Brothers Kangaroos, Glenmore Bulls and Rockhampton Panthers.
Each club will field a team in each division of the competition – senior men, senior women, reserve grade men, under-17 boys and under-15 boys, under-16 girls and under-13 mixed.
The fixtures will also feature themed rounds including ANZAC Round, Sir Doug Nicholls Round and for the first time, Pride Round in July.
AFL Capricornia Competition Manager Jourdan Novak is excited to see what this season will bring.
“AFL Capricornia’s competitions will continue to grow in strength and competitiveness. Teams that missed finals last year in all grades will be ready to bounce back and prove themselves in 2024,” he said.
“In 2023, we saw a six per cent increase in participation compared to 2022. This season, we will see new faces take to the field in what is anticipated to be one of our best years yet.
“With most clubs already starting their pre-season campaigns, everyone is looking to work the hardest and train the best over the next six weeks in preparation for the big year ahead.
“I look forward to seeing how the competitions unfold in 2024.”
The record-breaking Yeppoon Swans is again the team that all Triple M Senior Men’s teams will be chasing. The Swans will be chasing an unprecedented 10th consecutive Premiership this year and will start the season at home against the BITS Saints.
The Yeppoon Swans Triple M Senior Women also be looking for a premiership three-peat, also kicking off their campaign against BITS.
The Swans Triple M Senior Men’s team began their winning streak midway through 2015, winning their first flag later that year. In 2023, their record winning streak of 128 games came to an end. The Swans have also found success in the Reserves competition, with a four-peat recently ending, and their women’s team as current back-to-back premiers.
The Triple M Senior Men’s team consists of players that have played in a majority of the premiership winning teams, with others who have played in all nine premiership matches, now vying for their 10th flag.
President of the Yeppoon Swans Peter Watkins is proud of the team and the period of success the team, and in turn, the club, has seen.
“The success of the Swans has been built upon a team which is made up primarily of players that have played together since juniors with the occasional players that come and go to the town,” he said.
“Most of these same players are still playing together today along with players coming through the ranks.
“They work hard and for each other to ensure success, are good mates, and it’s up to us as club Administrators to ensure we do as much as we can to make the environment right for them to be able to enjoy their footy and ultimately perform to their best.”
The club continues to improve both on and off the field, providing an environment for players to succeed.
“We focus on all facets of the club, both on-field and off-field, and strive to be better,” he said.
“We have worked to develop our junior programs and women’s programs, ensuring we’re able to field 11 teams in 2024 across the AFL Capricornia competitions.”
Captain of the Yeppoon Swans Triple M Senior Men’s team, Matt Wallin, is determined to secure the record 10th premiership flag.
“It hasn’t sunk in for me personally, that we are looking for a 10th premiership, but I feel it’s a huge achievement and something we can look back on in years to come and be proud of,” he said.
“What we’ve been doing across nine seasons has been working well, and we’ve put in a lot of effort to get to where we are today. Our playing group is very keen to achieve this milestone and we have a good depth of talent this year across our senior men’s age groups, and players who have been a part of the majority of premierships.
“The AFL Capricornia Triple M Senior Men’s competition has continued to improve and we’re ready for the close match ups the season will bring.”
