Santiago’s Los Santos will play their second ever Australia vs Chile AFL match in Santiago on Saturday 28 July at 2pm in Lo Barnechea, to raise funds for the 2010 Earthquake affected school, Liceo de Niñas de Concepción.
Los Santos Australian Football club was founded in 2008 is currently led by Committee President, Iain Last.
The team has played a number of international games against Argentina, Brazil and “the Convicts”, an Australian touring team in October 2011.
After the success of the inaugural Chile vs. Australia match last August, the event has now become a fixture in the Los Santos calendar.
The 2012 match aims to raise $50,000 AUD in funds through corporate sponsorship and game day events for the Liceo de Niñas school.
There will be a delegation of representatives from the school present on the day, as well as other distinguished guests from Santiago’s business community, with everyone excited about the game.
“We [the School] are thoroughly looking forward to the event and learning about the sport of AFL,” the principal at Liceo de Niñas said.
Los Santos club Vice President, Nigel Grigg, said the local team was also looking forward to the game.
“The team is looking forward to showcasing the sport of Aussie Rules here in Chile and helping supporting Liceo de Niñas,” Mr Grigg said.
In addition to the game, the club will also host an AFL clinic for the children that attend on the day.
In 2010 the Queensland Government donated $500,000 AUD to Liceo de Niñas to assist with the reconstruction efforts following the devastating 2010 Earthquake. The school has since been relocated and is still in the restoration process.
The Australian Embassy has also been involved with the support of Liceo de Niñas, and recently the Australian ambassador travelled to Concepción for the reinauguration ceremony of the school.
“It is a pleasure to support this initiative, which emphasises the strong relationship between Chile and Australia,” an embassy representative said.
