Country against City.
It’s a tried and tested battle, where the best city players fight it out against the best country players and it’s back on the AFL Mackay calendar in 2022.
Hosted by the Magpies Sporting Club for the second year running, the clash will be played on Monday, April 25th to commemorate ANZAC Day.
Pulling on the country jumper are players from Whitsunday Sea Eagles, Moranbah Bulldogs, Bakers Creek Tigers and Mackay Magpies.
City teams include players from Mackay City Hawks, Eastern Swans and North Mackay Saints.
AFL Mackay Competition Manager, Alex Brooks, who’s recently moved to Mackay to manage the competition, said he was looking forward to the day.
“This will be my first experience with the City verses Country clash, and from all reports it’s a great day on the AFL Mackay calendar,” he said.
“ANZAC Day is such an important day to remember how fortunate we are as a nation and gives the opportunity to reflect on sacrifices made by our service men and women. To be able to donate 10% of the proceeds back to the RSL as well is a great initiative and something we can all get behind.”
Magpies Sporting Club Sport and Community Liaison Officer, Gayan Loku, said the club was proud to be hosting the clash.
“Magpies Sporting Club is proud to be hosting the AFL Mackay ANZAC Day Fixture between City and Country again in 2022,” he said.
“Playing Australian rules football on this prestigious National Day of Remembrance has a rich history, and we are honoured to be playing our part here in Mackay.
“We are delighted that we have such a terrific facility to showcase football in the region and we look forward to ensuring it’s a great experience for all involved”
Gates will open at 12:30pm and will see the women’s action kicking off at 1pm, followed by the men’s game at 3pm.
There is plenty of entertainment for the whole family on offer, including face painting and food trucks.
