Grange ruckman Jim McMahon is this week’s player of the week.
Wilston Grange big man Jim McMahon played a key role in the Gorillas’ win over Surfers paradise on Saturday, earning him the AP Cup Player of the week.
McMahon missed a year of football after breaking his leg, but has hit his straps since returning at the start of the year.
The ruckman was damaging against the Demons, dominating the hit-outs and was a big part of the Gorillas’ strong second-half performance, utilising his height advantage.
A Grange veteran, McMahon said it was great to pick up a win over the Demons, who have been somewhat of a bogey side for them.
“We haven’t had much success against Surfers recently so we’re very happy,” he said.
“The lads are well up.”
In a tight game, Wilston Grange’s physicality proved the difference, and McMahon said the side made a concerted effort to put more physical pressure on in the second half.
“We really had to lift to counter them,” he said.
“They came out really physical and we had to match them and that’s what we did the whole game and finally got on top of them in the last quarter.”
Despite such a long injury lay-off, McMahon said he was feeling as good as ever this season, and it’s showing, with his strong start to the year.
The Gorillas will need him to fire in the upcoming weeks, with a number of massive games, headed by this weekend’s clash with Springwood.
McMahon said the side would be ready for the challenge.
“We’ve got a few tough away games coming up and we’re going to have to work hard against some quality sides,” he said.
“But things are looking good.”
