Harris Andrews has long been touted as the Brisbane Lions captain in-waiting. The wait is now over with the Lions announcing the Queensland talent pathway graduate as co-captain alongside Lachie Neale, with Hugh McCluggage named as vice-captain.
The pair will take over from fellow Brisbane product Dayne Zorko who recently stepped down as skipper after five years.
Andrews moved to Queensland with his family at age four where joined the Aspley Hornets NAB AFL Auskick program and quickly rose through the junior, youth, senior and representative ranks.
The Lions academy player made his senior football debut in Brisbane’s NEAFL side, and in the QAFL with Wilston Grange. He turned heads in 2013 when he became the leading goal kicker in the NEAFL U18 competition, booting 80 goals in just 17 games. He represented Queensland in the 2014 TAC Cup and national carnival and starred in defence for the state U18s side.
Brisbane snatched him up with their second pick in the 2014 National Draft where he was the 61st pick overall. The following year he made his AFL debut in round three against the Tigers and solidified his spot in the top side as a key defender.
The dual-Australian has developed into one of the best defenders in the league, highlighted by selection in the AFLPA’s 22Under22 team, while he has also won the Lions’ ‘Most Professional Player’ award several times.
Andrews will step up into the co-captain role for 2023 after being vice-captain for the past five seasons.
