By Daniel McKenzie
The Burleigh Bombers have recorded their second win of the season with a 29.19 (190), to 7.7 (49) victory over Coolangatta at Peak Oval.
Extending their lead at every change, the Bombers were eventual 141 point winners, seemingly relishing the warm and sunny conditions, showing off their superior fitness and skill level.
A fiery contest at times, Burleigh tested their opponents physically and on more than one occasion players had to be separated.
It reached a boiling point when on the stroke of half time, players from both teams came together before being directed to their respective change rooms.
The Blues tried hard and matched their opponents early in the contest but the Bombers showed poise and relentless effort and were able to lift when it mattered.
While Burleigh had control of the contest from the start, both forward lines functioned efficiently when the ball came forward and Coolangatta looked more than capable when the ball was in their forward 50.
The two teams had distinctly different game plans which saw the Blues primarily using the flanks when moving the ball, while the Bombers would hit a target wide then bring the ball back through the corridor.
This proved the difference as Bomber players were able to burn off their opponent in transition and find space in the middle.
They were also well drilled without the ball and set up with a three quarter zone which generated attack from turnover when the Blues were unable to penetrate it coming out of defence.
The second quarter saw Burleigh step up their domination in the ruck which gave their players first use of the ball.
While Coolangatta scored the first goal of the quarter, Burleigh was able to put distance between themselves and the Blues and doubled their score for the quarter.
The third quarter did most of the damage and Burleigh continuously broke the lines and banged on ten goals to two to put the match well beyond doubt.
Coolangatta-Tweed struggled to maintain possession or find space in the third and more often than not was pressured while in possession which resulted in turnovers which Burleigh continuously capitalised on.
This was the main difference and Burleigh’s confidence grew stronger as the quarter wore on.
The fourth quarter was similar to the third and when Terry Knight brilliantly broke from a pack, baulked and snapped truly on the run it was party time and the travelling fans celebrated with their players.
The one-sided game was won in the middle and via superior game plan and ability to execute it.
Coolangatta-Tweed had few winners across the park all day but looked much stronger when their playing coach ‘Dougie’ Hawkins was able to play on the ball.
He was able to extract the ball from a contest and hit a target further up the field but unfortunately for the Blues he spent more than half the game resting at full forward.
Coolangatta were also well served by Boughton, who kicked three goals at full forward, Sanderson who looked a cut above at times and won plenty of the ball, Waldron, Mcleod and Maxwell who were serviceable and Beer-Carey who tirelessly threw himself headfirst into contests.
In the end though, Burleigh had too many winners and were superiorly led by Luke Felsman who kicked six, Terry Knight who won plenty of the ball and kicking seven, Sullivan who offered a lead all day on his way to kicking seven, and Matt Correa who generated a lot of inside 50’s via turnover from the forward flank.
The romp entrenches Burleigh in third spot with a healthy percentage of 194.59 and a game in hand.
They will be full of confidence in round 5 when they host Yeronga at home.
Coolangatta, who are on one win from four matches, have a chance to rectify this week’s game when they meet Kenmore at home.
They will be hoping for a better showing with more consistency across four quarters.
