dominating performance by Cairns has meant nearly half of their squad has been included in the Qld Women’s Team, the Sunfire to go to the National Championships in Adelaide in June this year.
In the first round of the State Championships held at ZillmereWAFC, SEQ South played SEQ North in a wet and slippery encounter. The scoreline reflected poor conditions with SEQ North edging out a fast finishing SEQ South by 10 points with a final score of 7.9.51 to 6.5.41. Kate Lutkins & Jade Pregelj from SEQ South and Heidi Thompson & Yolanda Jones from North were all stand out performers.
Round 2 had Cairns pitted against SEQ South in better conditions than the evening before but still fairly wet underfoot at Morningside AFC. South never seemed to gain any momentum against a big bodied Cairns who used their physicality to power through South’s defences and take the win by a commanding 11 goals. Final score 11.17.83 to 2.4.16. Asta Naden & Jo Butland dominated for Cairns with Kate Lutkins and Indy Sleeth putting another good performance for South.
Kedron AFC hosted the final game of the Championships with SEQ North hosting Cairns. With both teams being undefeated, whoever won would win the Championships. Once again Cairns’ physicality seemed to put SEQ North off their game and they were soon falling behind a surging Cairns. SEQ North managed to score a few late goals to lessen the gap but Cairns had already sealed the championships earlier in the game with a 8.13.61 to 4.0.24 win. Ashleigh Singleton & Asta Nade were again strong performers for Cairns with Morningside pair Jenna Van Dyk & Emma Zielke standing up for North.
Kate Lutkins from SEQ South won Player of the Championships with a total of 9 votes (tallied from coaches & umpire votes), with Cairns duo Asta Naden and Ashleigh Singleton finishing on 8 & 6 votes respectively.
