The Broadbeach Cats has fired the first shot in the 2011 QAFL recruiting stakes, snaring boom ex-Redland full forward Jason Eagle.
Runner-Up in the 2000 Hughson Medal and a Queensland State representative in 2009, Eagle will rejoin the QAFL after a one-year stint and a key role with Shepparton United, the Goulburn Valley League premiers.
He kicked 99 goals and represented the GVFL, kicking four goals in a win against the strong Ovens & Murray League side in what was effectively a showdown for the title of Victorian Country’s No.1 s.de
His near-century effort this year comes gives him a game average of more than five per game over the last three years and makes him a prize recruit for the Cats.
The heavily-tattood Eagle kicked 85 goals for Redland in ’09, when he was a narrow second to NT Thunder’s Darren Ewing for the Hughson Medal and earned a spot in the QAFL Team of the Year, and kicked 111 goals for the Cairns Saints premiership side in 2008.
His capture is a giant boost for the Cats, who who are still to appoint a coach to replace two-year boss Adrian Smith as they look to restructure their entire football operation.
“I spoke with quite a few clubs but I was keen to get back to Queensland and play in the State League,” Eagle said via a statement issued by the club today.
“I was impressed with the restructure that’s going on at Broadbeach, their attitude toward changing culture, their young talent and an opportunity to be part of an exciting chapter in the Club’s history.”
In 2010, Broadbeach was competitive against most clubs, enjoyed a win over late season powerhouse Mt Gravatt and leading eventual premiers Morningside deep into the fourth quarter at their home ground at Merrimac Oval.
Already the club has recruited well respected and vastly experienced fitness coach Gary Fox, former fitness coach to the Brisbane Bears under Peter Knights, in what club officials regard as another key signing.
