Friday night lights came to Yeronga last week as AFL Queensland held its inaugural AFL 9s Champions Carnival night.
After a bumper Spring season of AFL 9s, which saw more players don 9s bibs than ever before, local competition champions were given the chance to fight for bragging rights as the South East Queensland AFL 9s Champions, as well as $750 prize money.
With music playing around the ground and teams setting up picnics for their half time breaks everyone was out for a good night.
In the mixed division Coorparoo champions ‘The Ned Heads’ cruised through their games. Utilising the girls ability to score 9 point goals the Ned Heads looked to feed the footy to their girls at every opportunity and their strategy paid off, going undefeated with a percentage over 200%.
The men’s final was between Coorparoo victors ‘Four n Plenty’ and Zillmere crew ‘Eshay Clan’. Both teams were undefeated heading into the final, with tough early games clearly taking their toll on the social warriors.
After 30 minutes the teams couldn’t be separated.
Clearly exhausted after the match, both teams requested not to play extra time, meaning an alternative tie breaker was required.
So it came down to a ‘shoot out’. Players were asked to take shots for goal from preselected spots from 30 metres out.
The teams went kick for kick until finally, after 8 shots; the Eshay Clan converted and piled the pressure onto Four ‘n’ Plenty. The Coorparoo sides kick looked good off the boot but faded late, handing the win to the Eshay Clan.
