The Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy completed a clean sweep of victories in the 2-game Queensland Under 18 State Academy trials with a comprehensive 55-point win over the Gold Coast Suns Academy at Labrador on Sunday.
The Scott Borlace coached Lions opened the game with midfield domination; Hayden Bertoli-Simmons, Isaac Conway, Luke Rogerson and Sam Gribble leading the way to a 5-goal lead at quarter-time.
Up forward, Bill Pendlebury, Matthew Hammelmann and Dylan Bresnehan were lively for the Lions while defenders Nick Jackson, Steven Coutts and Lewis Radford were impassable down back.
The GC SUNS showed fighting qualities in the last quarter, and while they outscored their opponents inaccurate kicking for goal didn’t help their cause.
On-ballers James Holland and Tyler Cornish tried hard as did defenders Jack Taylor and Dylan Mutu while up-forward, Darcy Trask and Isaac Rokeby looked most dangerous.
The Brisbane Lions were too good in the end running out winners 17-8 (110) to the Gold Coast SUNS’ 7-13 (55).
The Queensland Scorpions Under 18 Training squad will be announced this Wednesday March 27 with selection based performance in both the trial games and the 4- month lead-in Summer Training Academy program.
AFL Queensland would like to congratulate and thank all Academy staff, players and parents for their wonderful contribution over the duration of the Summer Training program and wish all the players well for the remainder of the 2013 season.
Special mention must go to Lions Academy Manager Luke Curran and Gold Coast SUNS Academy Manager Jason Torney for their magnificent effort over the Academy Summer training period.
