Two days, nine clubs and invaluable pre-season practice.
With the 2023 Community Football Season right around the corner, there couldn’t have been a better time for Coolangatta Football Club to introduce their inaugural McNab Cup.
The new competition will take place this weekend at the Coolangatta AFC, with the men playing on Saturday and the women on Sunday.
There are four men’s teams and eight women’s teams competing for the Cup, with players ranging from QFA and QFAW Division 2 to the State League QAFL and QAFLW.
QFA Competition Manager, Josh Rhodes said he was thrilled when Coolangatta decided to host the event.
“The McNab Cup is a great initiative on behalf of Coolangatta and is an excellent way to provide SEQ cubs with practice match experience against opposition they may not normally come up against,” he said.
“The pre-season period can be tough work for club volunteers as they try to juggle training, player registrations, and the logistics of organising practice matches.
“The McNab Cup allows clubs to come together in one place and participate in organised games against multiple opponents.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for clubs to bond, see how their new recruits fare, and potentially take home some money by winning the final.”
Over the weekend, there is a $1000 cash prize up for grabs for the winning men’s and women’s sides, plus $250 for the male and female player of the series.
Coolangatta Football Club President, John Lavender said he was excited for the upcoming weekend.
“We are looking forward to a great weekend of action packed footy,” he said.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for South East Queensland clubs to play a round robin of practice matches to prepare themselves for the start of the season.
“It’s also a great opportunity for Coolangatta Football Club to showcase our new female friendly change room facilities.”
