The spotlight turns to Division Two this week, with round one headed by a local derby.
They might be new to SEQAFL Division Two, but the Redcliffe Tigers and Caboolture Lions will tread familiar ground this Saturday.
The fierce rivals, who were both elevated from Division three this season, will fight it out for the fourth annual Councillors Cup and local bragging rights.
Caboolture centre-half forward, Damian Harding has played in every Councillors Cup and said he couldn’t think of a better way to start the season.
“It’s been a long pre-season and everyone’s keen to play,” Harding said.
“And to play your local derby in round one – it will be huge.”
The Lions have won all three Councillors Cups and will be looking to make it four straight on Saturday.
Harding said there was a mutual respect between the clubs, but once the teams get out there, the claws will definitely be out.
“We certainly don’t hate each other,” he said.
“It’s different once we’re out there, though.”
Redcliffe will also unfurl their Division Three premiership flag on the day and Tigers coach Steve Jenkins said it would be a great start to the season.
“I think it adds something extra to the day,” he said.
Jenkins said his side would be looking to gain confidence early in the season against the established Division Two sides.
“It’s about trying to get some confidence and that can come in many forms, even an honourable loss against some of the more established sides,” he said.
Local councillors, James Houghton and Greg Chippendale, will be on hand to present the Cup to the winning side on Saturday.
The match kicks off at 2:15pm at Rothwell Park.
