Yeronga/South Brisbane have completed a stunning debut season in the Brisbane Women’s League, beating Morningside by nine points in the grand final.
Based around the team that played in 2010 as the Western Magpies, Yeronga (pictured below) won a thrilling contest 8-12 (60) to 7-9 (51) in front of about 500 people at Coorparoo on Sunday.
Yeronga’s Kate Lutkins, runner-up to Logan’s Jade Pregelj in the League B&F Medal announced on Friday night, was more than happy to collect her compensation via the historic premiership win.
Her best afield performance completed a sensational double after she took equivalent honors in Yeronga’s preliminary final win a week earlier over Logan, ending their five-year premiership rule.
Pictured at top with her dog Kostya, Lutkins was one of two wounded worries to play an heroic role in Yeronga’s grand final win, defying a broken nose to lead her side to victory over the minor premiers.
Renee Harvey left the ground with a nasty cut above her eye in the first quarter that required eight stitches, but she, too, returned to battle and was a critical factor in a hard-fought final quarter.
Note: More information on the grand final will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
