Brisbane’s Ferny Grove State High School Open Boys have beaten Corinda State High to win the 2012 Brisbane Lions Cup Division 2 Championship.
Defending champions Corinda were undefeated throughout the competition, setting a tough challenge for their Ferny Grove opponents.
The game was a tense affair that didn’t disappoint. The margin between the two teams was never more than eight points with Corinda leading at each break helped by dominant displays from Jye Lawson, Ben Auld and Mitch O’Brien defending superbly at full back for the green and gold.
The last quarter was an arm wrestle that saw Ferny Grove really take it up a notch. They peppered the goals, kicking 3.5 to Corinda’s 3.1 in a quarter where the lead changed hands several times.
Matt Tydink and Bill Bryant were very good in attacking the ball and consistently driving it forward.
It all came down to the last kick of the game, when with his team five points down Ferny Grove’s full forward Sam Konecny took a mark right on the siren to have a shot at goal.
Konecny lined up from 30 metres out, already under pressure by the siren and kicking from a tight angle with a cross breeze. The full forward kept his cool and slotted the goal to give his team a thrilling one point win.
It was a reverse of fortune for Corinda who last year won the grand final by a solitary point.
Stand-in Ferny Grove SHS Coach for the day Joe Stallard was thrilled with his players’ for their efforts throughout the game and their refusal to give up.
Corinda Coach and AFL stalwart Ken McGuire admired the standard of the game and was full of praise for his players’ contribution.
A big thank you must go to Western Districts Sports Club for hosting the grand final with the change in venues being necessary.
The Brisbane Lions Cup Division 2 and 3 is open to all State High Schools and runs in March and May each year.
