The Queensland Young Scorpions kicked off their 2012 NAB Under 16 National Championship campaign with a 67 point win over Tasmania at Blacktown on Sunday.
Despite some inaccuracy in front of goals the Scorpions overpowered the Tasmanians 14.22.106 to 6.3.9.
The Queenslanders had winners on all lines led by co-captains Darcy Cameron-Reeves and Lachlan Waller through the midfield, Nick Jackson and James Holland in defence and dangerous forwards Liam Dawson, Matthew Hammelmann and Darcy Trask.
The Scorpions led by 33 points at half time before kicking 6 goals 6 behinds in a dominant 3rd quarter to set up a 10 goal lead heading into the final term.
All 25 players were given an opportunity to play in Round 1 and with no major injury concerns the coaches and selectors will have a difficult task reducing the squad to 22 players for Rounds 2 and 3 of the Championships.
Coach John Rankin was full of praise for his young charges work rate, tackling and defensive pressure and hopeful that the team’s conversion in front of goals will improve over the next two games.
The Young Scorpions’ next assignment is on Wednesday July 11 against the Northern Territory at Kellyville.
