Aaron “Flash” Davey will again get the opportunity to coach North Queensland (NQ) this year after last year’s Intrastate Clash was cancelled due to COVID-19.
The former Melbourne Demons star, steps into the position after being a player for the North Queensland squad in 2018 and 2019, while also coaching the Cairns City Lions.
Davey said, it was an honour to be appointed coach of the 2021 NQ side.
“There’s some great talent in NQ and I believe we are strong contenders for the win this year,” he said.
“I’m very excited to have the clash back to Cairns, hopefully it will be extra motivation for the boys, and we can get the trophy back up in the NQ region.”
Community Football Manager Queensland, Barry Gibson said after last year’s clash was abandoned due to COVID-19, AFL Queensland was delighted to be in a position to re-appoint Aaron.
“Aaron is highly respected for not only what he achieved at the elite level, but the work he has done in helping rebuild the Cairns City Lions over the past three years,” he said.
“Davey has been able to create representative program that players buy into and I have no doubt we will see an outstanding contest this year, “he said.
This year’s match will be played on the weekend of June 12/13 and is tentatively scheduled for Cairns, paving the way for a possible alignment to the Round 13 Toyota AFL Premiership Match between St Kilda and Adelaide.
