Reigning premiers Anglican Church Grammar School will look to add to their silverware collection on Wednesday at Zillmere.
The historic Foundation Cup will be contested by Churchie and St Joseph’s Nudgee College in Round 2 of the AFL SportsReady Independent Schools Cup GPS Schools’ Division.
The match is an annual fixture and features a replay of the First XVIII grand final from the previous year.
The teams play for a unique piece of silverware – a cup that was once an ice bucket until it was found locked away in a storeroom at the old AFLQ offices at Coorparoo by long-time staff member Murray Bird and converted into a prestigious trophy.
Nudgee currently have possession of the Foundation Cup after defeating Brisbane Boys’ College in the 2012 grand final replay, and will no doubt be aiming to retain it once more.
The match kicks off at 5:15pm at Zillmere, with the Senior (Year 10) boys from both schools playing a 4:15pm curtain raiser.
Across town at Yeronga, Round 2 continues with Brisbane Boys’ College taking on Brisbane State High in the Seniors, and Nudgee White in the First XVIII.
Round 2 concludes Friday with Junior matches featuring BBC Black v Nudgee White at Yeronga, and Nudgee Blue v BBC Green at Zillmere, both at 4:15pm.
