With footy fever still running hot in the Sunshine State, 2021 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet for junior footy in Queensland.
As part of its commitment to leave a legacy in Queensland following 2020, the AFL has announced it will give every junior participant who signs up to play club footy in 2021 a free footy and pump.
AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan said it was part of a special thank you to Queensland.
“On behalf of the AFL, I want to again say thank you to the Queensland community who threw their support behind our game in 2020,” he said.
“Now it’s our turn to give something back. We’re sending all Queensland junior participants a free AFL footy when they sign up to play at their local club.”
“It was a monumental year for AFL in Queensland in 2020 and we’re committed to delivering a lasting legacy across the state.”
“The opportunity to grow the game not just in South East Queensland but in regional Queensland is huge.”
Brisbane Lions hero Charlie Cameron and Gold Coast SUNS stars Matt Rowell and Kalinda Howarth have been enlisted as Junior Footy Ambassadors and will help champion the push to see more youngsters playing Aussie rules in the Sunshine State than ever before.
“Off the back of the historic year that saw Queensland become the unofficial home of the AFL, we’re expecting to see around 40,000 young people playing the game here in 2021 – across our junior programs and Auskick,” said Mr McLachlan.
“Footy in Queensland continues to go from strength to strength. We saw outstanding growth in our South East Queensland juniors in 2020 – which is the largest junior competition in the country.”
“It’s great to have Charlie, Matt and Kalinda on board. We’re looking forward to working with them and all of our Queensland junior clubs this year to help thousands of kids across the state kick footy goals!”
