Some of Brisbane’s talented school footballers could be taking their first step towards a long footy career in tonight’s Brisbane Lions Academy Future Stars program.
The Future Stars Carnival showcases some of the best 12 and 13 year-old athletes, identified by AFL Queensland staff and/or school teachers, and forms an important part in the state’s talent pathway.
Tonight’s matches will give the players, many of whom excel in a variety of sports, a chance to test themselves at a high level of Australian football.
After the carnival, a squad of boys will be picked to join in with other boys from junior club football to form the Future Stars squad in the Brisbane Lions academy.
This squad will undertake a series of training sessions and practice games throughout 2015 to develop their knowledge and skills in Australian football.
The Future Stars program has been running for a decade and gives many boys their first taste of a structured Australian football program outside of school programs.
Past participants of the program have gone on to play at club, regional and state level, with some representing Queensland at the U16 and U18 National Championships.
The carnival runs from 5-8pm at Giffin Park, Birubi St, Coorparoo.
