The Gold Coast SUNS playing list visited 11 primary schools and two high schools across the Gold Coast region on Tuesday to kick off the 2016 Australia Post AFL Community Camp.
Running over three days, the SUNS will visit 40 primary schools and nine junior clubs, aiming to promote AFL football, leadership and a healthy lifestyle.
Speaking with the media at Coolangatta State School, GC SUNS draftee Callum Ah Chee said the day had been a success for the club.
“It’s been amazing. It’s good to see all the kids out here,” he said.
“I think we are getting out to about 40 schools over the three days so it’s really good to do that community side of things and I think we are really strong in that part with our club.”
GC SUNS rookie Darcy MacPherson recalled his own experiences with AFL visits when reflecting on the role the Community Camp plays for children.
“I remember when AFL players used to come to your local footy club or your school, I always used to get a buzz out of it because that’s where you wanted to be and you love seeing the AFL players helping you out,” he said.
“I love giving back to them, so it’s awesome.”
Player visits will continue on Thursday and Friday this week across the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales areas.
