The first squares of grass were laid on the new AFLQ main ground at Yeronga yesterday afternoon but the first NEAFL game on the bright new facility won’t be played until at least mid to late May.
The NEAFL was hoping to give the new ground, situated at new AFLQ headquarters at Cansdale Road, a high profile beginning with the Gold Coast fixtured to play Mt Gravatt there in Round 1.
However, damage caused by the great Brisbane Flood ensured the grass could not be laid until this week and will take time to knit and settle.
League officials won’t schedule NEAFL matches for the ground until the grass has settled in a satisfactory manner.
The venue for the Round 1 Suns v Vultures match is still being determined, but two other fixtures involving the Suns have been settled.
The 16 April Round 3 clash with Aspley will now be played at H&A Oval at 11.15am in a double-header featuring home side Broadbeach against the NT Thunder immediately after.
Then in Round 6 on 7 May, the Suns will play the Lions Reserves in the first of another double-header at Fankhauser Reserve, with Southport meeting the NT Thunder in the later game.
