Townsville’s University Hawks will play their home games at Riverway Stadium in 2021.
The partnership between Townsville City Council and AFL Queensland provides the Hawks with the opportunity to play at a state-of-the-art ground after two decades without a permanent base.
University Hawks President, Narrisha McDougall said they were hopeful this announcement would help grow participation numbers and attract new participants to the sport.
“It will also be a more enjoyable experience for our members, juniors and seniors who have supported our club throughout the years,” she said.
“We are extremely thankful to have had the support of AFL Queensland and Townsville City Council; they have made sure we were able to make this move across without a substantial financial cost to the club.”
AFL Community Football Manager Queensland, Barry Gibson said it was great to have the Hawks back at Riverway as co-tenants with the Thuringowa Bulldogs.
“Riverway Stadium has hosted AFL matches and international cricket, so to have content there every week is fantastic for Townsville football,” he said.
“Playing all their home games at Riverway will certainly assist the Hawks ongoing efforts to further develop their junior program, as well being attractive to new players in the senior space.”
The University Hawks will open their season at Riverway Stadium as the home team in round one on April 10th.
