Mt Gravatt will confirm they are ‘back’ if they beat Southport in an intriguing QAFL Round 9 clash at Dittmer Park tomorrow, reports The Courier Mail.
Last year’s grand finalists have endured wildly fluctuating fortunes this season but are gaining strength each week and are set to bring back crack midfielder Ash Evans from long-term injury and defender Tom Tarrant from long-term suspension for the clash.
The Vultures have won seven of the last 11 games between the two clubs, including an upset win in last year’s preliminary final.
The Sharks have stewed on that loss for nine months and will be primed to rebound, although they are backing up from the arduous trip to Darwin.
“We are capable of rising to the level that we need to play at,” Vultures coach David Lake said of the Southport challenge.
The strength and experience of Labrador will be pitted against the sheer speed of the NT Thunder, who toppled the seemingly unstoppable Sharks last week, at Cooke-Murphy Oval.
“They’re obviously going really well so it’s another big challenge,” said Tigers coach Jarrod Field. “We’ve had a light week on the track preparing to chase all their little blokes around.”
The Western Magpies face a huge challenge against Morningside in a promotional game at Toowoomba’s Heritage Oval, although the Panthers have yet another key midfielder in Ryan Holman with injury problems.
“They will want to come to play,” new Magpies coach Jarrod Thorpe warned after a highly competitive effort against the Lions last week.
Aspley play their first game under former Port Adelaide player Russell Evans following the midweek resignation of Russ Harding against the Lions Reserves at Graham Road on Sunday.
The Lions have lost rugged onballer Ryan Harwood through suspension and are set to field 8-9 top-up players, making for an even contest.
Redland’s season goes on the line against Broadbeach at Victoria Point.
