Cleve Hughes has opened a sizeable gap now in the race for leading goalkicker honours in the QAFL.
Wednesday 7 July 2010
Southport star Cleve Hughes has opened the biggest lead of the season in the race for the Ray Hughson Medal following his 11-goal haul against Broadbeach last Saturday.
Hughes has played in all 12 games for the Sharks this season and booted 60 goals to lead by 14 from last year’s winner Darren Ewing.
Hughes’ outstanding effort was his first double-figure tally of the season, bettering the nine that he registered against Aspley at Fankhauser Reserve in Round 5.
Ewing booted four goals against Redland in Alice Springs, his best effort in five weeks after having gone 0-2-3-0 over the previous month.
Mt Gravatt midfielder-forward Nathan Gilliland moved into equal fourth place following his six-goal effort at Labrador.
Gilliland is on track for a career-best season with his goalkicking, having registered 35 majors in his debut season in 2008 and 48 goals last year.
He has 33 goals after 12 rounds of 2010 and his career tally for the Vultures now stands at 116.
