Schools throughout south-east Queensland are invited to nominate teams for the 20th season of the AFL Queensland Independent Schools Competition. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, 9 June.

This wonderfully popular competition, in which almost 3000 students in 128 teams from 58 different schools participated last year, caters for teams at U13, U14, U15 and Open levels, and will run from mid-August until October.

According to AFLQ School Programs Manager Nathan Gilliland, the key objective is to provide students with the opportunity to experience Australian Football while representing their school.

Traditionally, the competition is conducted on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoon/evenings to alleviate clashes with more traditional school sports offered in the Independent system.

Gilliland explains that through the tremendous support provided by the AFL, Queensland Government, and the local club network, AFL Queensland is able to provide all resources required to administer the competition including Match Managers, Umpires, Sports Trainers, Playing Venues and subsidised playing apparel for new schools participating.

AFL Queensland also has an extensive development staff network to support participating schools.

Gilliland said that once nominations are received, an invitation will be extended to attend a planning session later this month.
