The Brisbane Lions Academy scored a 54 point win over the Gold Coast SUNS Academy in Game 1 of their two game practice match schedule on Saturday.
Played at AFL Queensland headquarters at Yeronga, the first of the two games will help decide the Queensland Scorpions State under 18 team in 2012.
The Lions Academy set up the win with a 5 goal to nil second quarter after a very tight first quarter where both sides were finding their feet.
The Lions midfield, led by Isaac Conway, Josh Smith and James Ives generated plenty of scoring opportunities for the forward line whilst defenders Michael Wyld and Aden Rutledge held firm down back.
A spirited fightback from the SUNS in the 3rd quarter, cut the margin to 21 points at three quarter time.
SUNS midfielders Andrew Boston and John Macansh provided plenty of drive and Tyler Jones was rock solid in defence.
The final quarter however proved all the Lions, with Adam Hall and Ryan Johnson slotting 2 goals each for the quarter, allowing the Lions to pull away and run out winners by 54 points.
The final selection trial game will be played Saturday 31 March at Fankhauser Reserve Southport commencing at 1.30 pm after the NEAFL game Southport v Gold Coast Suns.
