Local football is back in a big way this weekend. Be it community football or Under 18 state programs, fans will be able to wet their footballing appetites.
The inaugural Alpha Sport Pre-Season Cup will begin on Saturday, in a three-week knock out tournament consisting of 32 teams from the QAFL, QFA North and QFA South, QAFA (A) and QAFA (B)’s North, Central and South competitions, played across South-East Queensland.
Teams have been selected based on 2014 results, and are split into 4 pools of 8 teams each, with winners moving through to the next week of the competition, concluding with the grand final on March 28.
The cup will give teams an opportunity to play against rivals in their current competition, and other teams across different divisions, presenting a new challenge for all teams involved.
In a Saturday double header, the Queensland Under 18 youth girls squad, as well as the Hyundai Help For Kids Lions Under 18 Academy and the Gold Coast SUNS Under 18 Academy, will play matches at Fankhauser reserve, Southport.
At 12.00pm, the 60-member youth girls squad will start the day in an intra-squad match, which is incorporated into their three-day training camp at the Tallebudgera Recreation Centre.
The camp and match will be used to cut the squad of 60 to 27, who will then go onto represent Queensland at the National Youth Girls Championships in May.
At 2.00pm, the Lions and SUNS Academies will do battle in the first of two trial matches to determine the Queensland Under 18 representative squad for 2015.
They will play again the following Saturday, before the 27 man squad is announced on March 23.
