AFL Returns to Mackay this ANZAC Day with the Brisbane Lions Reserves to take on their Sydney Swans counterparts in the second North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) ANZAC Day Clash at Harrup Park.
The match is a replay of the 2013 NEAFL Grand Final that saw the Lions run out 14-point winners in a tight match.
This year’s schedule will see the annual City vs. Country representative match played after the NEAFL game to close out the day.
Over 4,000 fans turned out for the inaugural event in 2013 and AFL CEO Michael Conlan said he is confident of another great crowd.
“The Mackay AFL Community has built a wonderful event to honour ANZAC Day and the addition of the NEAFL match made the day even more special,” said Conlan.
“The AFL was thrilled with last year’s crowd number and with two of the best teams in the competition headlining the day we are expecting another great turnout.”
AFL Mackay President Rohan Howie said the event had become a highlight of the regions community calendar.
“With the support of the Mackay Branch RSL our ANZAC Day matches have become a major sporting event for the region,” he said.
“The day continues to grow each year which we see as another step toward hosting an AFL Premiership match in Mackay.”
Entry to the event will be by gold coin donation and a kid’s zone will feature plenty of activities for junior fans.
“For little more than some loose change, we’re inviting everyone to Harrup Park to enjoy some high quality AFL action and enjoy a fun day out for the whole family,” Howie said.
