Met North take out Inaugural 16 years & under School Girls AFL Carnival
After going through undefeated in six rounds of AFL, Met North was awarded the 1st 16 years & under School Girls Carnival title.
Teams from Met West, Met North, Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Peninsula and a Presidents team all competed in the Carnival over the weekend at Yeronga AFC. All teams thoroughly enjoyed the scorching weather and made for great viewing for the 200 strong support base from all over the state.
The final results for the competition had Met North well out in front on 24 points, with Peninsula, Wide Bay Invitational & the President’s team all finishing on 18 points but finishing in the respective order due to percentage. Hosts Met West came home with a wet sail after being winless on Day 1 to finish on 12 points for the Carnival with Sunshine Coast on 9 points and Capricornia on 6 points.
Each region was awarded a Player of the Carnival with Tayla Harris from Met North winning the overall Player of the Carnival. Each coach was also able to award a most improved award, in the form of a cap signed by Brisbane Lions player Josh Drummond and Gold Coast Suns player Josh Fraser, to a player from their region.
Due to the Carnival being an Invitational carnival only, a touring Qld team were unable to be selected to compete at the U16 School Girls National championships. However a Qld Merit team was selected by regional coaches with 1st place picking 6 players, 2nd place picking 4 players, 3rd & 4th place picking 3 players and 5th-7th places picking 2 players each. Each player was presented with a Qld jersey by Female Ambassadors Josh Drummond and Josh Fraser for their Merit Team photo.
With such success from the Carnival in 2012, Met North has been appointed as the host for the 2013 Invitational Carnival with the hope of gaining State Championships status for 2014.
Congratulations to Met West for hosting such a great Carnival and we look forward to seeing the girls from each region competing in their local school, club and representative programs throughout 2012.
