Mountain Creek State High School has qualified for the grand final of the 2011 Queensland Northern States Cup.

Four teams were set to play in the quarter and semi finals held at Coorparoo on Wednesday August 13, but with Anglican Church Grammar School not able to fill a team for the day the remaining three teams battled it out.

St Andrews Catholic College from Cairns played Mountain Creek from the Sunshine Coast in the first game of the day.

Showing no signs of fatigue after a 4:30am flight to Brisbane, St Andrews kicked the first goal of the day before the teams went goal for goal up until half time.

After the break Mountain Creek kicked away and ran out winners by 7.8.50 to 3.6.24.

ACGS were scheduled to play Benowa State High from the Gold Coast in the other qualifier, and their withdrawal meant Benowa went straight into the grand final playoff against Mountain Creek.

With fresher legs and a little intelligence from having watched Mountain Creek’s earlier game, Benowa had the upper hand before the first bounce.

Benowa came out fast and kicked the first two goals of the game in the first quarter to set up a handy lead.

In what was a fantastic game of school football, Mountain Creek leveled the scores at three quarter time.

Mountain Creek then played a near perfect last quarter, out-scoring Benowa 3-3 to nil to win 6.6.42 to 3.3.21.

All boys showed great spirit throughout the day and it was fantastic to have schools travelling from all across Queensland to participate in a great competition, particularly to St Andrews Catholic College from Cairns who flew down just for the day to play a game of footy.

Mountain Creek State High School will now take on either, Sandgate, Palm Beach Currumbin or Helensvale State School from the School of Excellence division in the final, to be played on Wednesday 3 August 3 at the Gabba.
