AFL Wide Bay kicked off a new Under 7’s program last week with five teams from across the region.
It’s based on the Under 6 program that AFL Queensland released in 2013 which creates a pathway for kids that have finished Auskick to move into junior level AFL.
Bundaberg has two teams playing regularly on a Friday afternoon and Hervey Bay has put together three teams.
This has been a great way for the kids involved in Auskick at club land and also the surrounding schools to try the next step in AFL.
It has proved popular amongst parents and the kids as they can put their skills to the test and enjoy some modified footy.
Both Bundaberg and Hervey Bay are alternating their venues each week, so that each club gets a chance to host the Under 7’s. This also gives the parents an idea of the clubs that are in the area and helps them familiarise themselves with local junior AFL.
Each side gets a game of footy each night, whilst the resting team catches up on some training and general fun activities.
The skill improvement in the first two weeks of the program has been outstanding, but most importantly to see the kids running around with a smile on their face and enjoying their new found sport is the greatest thing of all.
