The Queensland Government has advised Cairns and Yarrabah local government areas will enter a three-day lockdown from 4pm Sunday 8th August.
As a result of the snap lockdown in the Far North, AFL Queensland advises that the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup – North Queensland (NQ) Championships will be postponed.
Six of the 23 schools that have qualified for the Championships are from Cairns and are now unable to attend.
The Championships celebrate the best of the best in school football from Rockhampton to Cairns.
More than 150 teams and 3, 000 students have competed in regional gala days across North Queensland this year to earn their place in the NQ Championships.
The winners from each of the six divisions at the NQ Championships book themselves a spot in the premier Queensland finals to be played on the Sunshine Coast in October.
AFL Queensland is working with all schools and stakeholders impacted by the postponement of the Championships and will communicate new dates in due course.
While the pandemic will continue to challenge us, the health, safety and wellbeing of our football community remains our highest priority.
AFL Queensland will continue to work with the Queensland Government and health authorities and be guided by their advice and direction.
