In the lead up to the annual North Queensland v South Queensland representative clash next month, AFL Queensland has selected the 2023 North Queensland (NQ) men’s and women’s squads.
North Queensland will be defending their titles on home soil this year, with both games to be played in Cairns at Cazaly’s Stadium on Saturday June 24.
An initial list of 52 men featuring players from Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Capricornia have been selected with the final team of 22 players to be announced closer to the match.
Players such as Callaway Parker (Townsville) and Matt Wallin (Capricornia) has come through the local representative programs, while Jack Mentha (VFL) Daniel Jackson (NTFL) boast high level experience.
The North Queensland Men’s Head Coach Wes Glass said he was excited to be leading the side.
“Being selected as the coach of the North Queensland side, gives me the opportunity to test myself as a coach and has been a goal of mine since arriving in NQ,” he said.
“The initial squad shows a strong mix of players from across the country, as well as locally grown talent.
“To be representing your region, your family and your local club isn’t something that is lost on me, and I will try to instil this in the squad.”
Competing alongside the North Queensland Men’s squad will be 53 of North Queensland’s best female players.
North Queensland Female Head Coach Jen Revell said she was thrilled to be working with such a talented squad.
“I’m very passionate about women’s sport so I’m really honoured to be Coaching the NQ women’s side,” she said.
“Assistant coaching the team last year for the first ever women’s match was something I’ll never forget being a part of.
“We have so much talent in North Queensland, so it’s amazing that AFLQ now have a platform for these players to showcase their talent.
“Our initial squad features girls from Cairns to Capricornia and includes a number of experienced players as well as some exciting up-and-comers.
“Something I’m really looking forward to is hosting the match in Cairns and knowing a lot of these players will get to play such a high-quality game in front of friends and family.”
Please note, AFL Queensland has the ability to add players into the squad based off performance at local club football.
