Round 19 Review: Labrador v Redland Victoria Point
By Abby Collins
In a thrilling finale to the home-and-away season, the Sharks outmanoeuvred the Tigers in a match marked by challenging weather and tactical battles.
Despite the windy conditions, the Sharks displayed exceptional resilience and strategic acumen, securing a victory with a final score of 11.11 (70) to 9.6 (60) at the Tigers’ den.
The game began with Redland Victoria Point taking an early lead with goals from Jarrod Huddy and Daniel Annabel, showcasing their offensie prowess.
However, Labrador wasn’t far behind, responding with goals from Justin Krok and Aiden Fyfe, making it a tight contest.
A week’s worth of rain meant players were battling to stay up right when they changed directions.
Sharks’ Craig Malone made significant contributions in the ruck, while both teams grappled to maintain possession due to the slippery field.
With a few back-and-forth exchanges, the quarter ended with the Sharks and Tigers neck and neck.
As the second quarter unfolded, the Sharks displayed their hunting instincts, with Huddy slotting his second goal in early.
Redland’s efficiency in using the corridor allowed them to dominate territory and ball possession, yet the scoreboard didn’t reflect their control.
Labrador’s Tom Simpson and Riley Coombes added to their tally of majors, keeping the margin close.
Just when it seemed the Sharks would pull away with Joshua Brown adding to the scoreboard, Coombes quickly answered back for the Tigers.
The quarter ended with the Sharks leading by just 12 points, setting up an exciting second half.
The third quarter kicked off with Labrador gaining momentum, with Krok kicking their first major.
Fyfe followed suit, and suddenly, it was a one-point ball game.
The intensity ramped up as both teams fought for midfield dominance, with Jay Foon and Simpson for the Tigers, and Malone and Luke O’Sullivan for the Sharks, putting on a show.
Raphael Geesu managed to break the deadlock for Redland Victoria Point, showcasing his agility and scoring prowess.
The play of this quarter was more dangerous, with players heading into contest after contest.
As the quarter closed, the Sharks held a precarious 12-point lead, but the Tigers were hungry for more.
The final quarter saw Labrador dominate early but failed to convert their efforts into points.
A brilliant mark from Billy Johnson reignited the Sharks’ offense, while Bailey Brown responded for the Tigers, keeping the pressure on.
However, it was the Sharks’ defence, led by Matthew Thomson and Mitch Stellard, that held strong, thwarting any momentum the Tigers tried to build, easily driving the ball back into their forward 50.
O’Sullivan’s goal widened the gap, and despite Labrador’s relentless attempts, Redland Victoria Point maintained composure and possession, sealing their victory.
The Sharks’ victory was a testament to their strategic play and resilience under pressure and sees them finish the home-and-away season in third place. Meanwhile, it’s the end of the road for Labrador who finish in eighth place.
Around the grounds, Aspley put in a dominant performance with a 66 point win over Palm Beach Currumbin to secure their spot at the top of table, with the Lions finishing in fifth.
Despite losing to Maroochydore, Morningside retain second place.
The Hornets and Panthers now earning byes and progressing to the second round of finals.
Wilston Grange finished their home-and-away season with a 140 point win over Noosa, and secure fourth spot on the ladder.
A 69-point win to Surfers Paradise over Sherwood sees them round out the top six.
Broadbeach got the job done over Mt Gravatt to finish their 2024 campaign on a high.
