Queensland’s three AIS-AFL Academy members have taken their talents to a second country in as many weeks, as part of the Academy’s European tour.
Southport’s Lachie Weller, Aspley’s Liam Dawson and Morningside’s Matt Hammelmann are halfway through the Academy tour of Europe, which kicked off in London last week.
The Academy played a trial match at the Harrow School in London, between two combined European/AIS-AFL sides, in the lead up to the main game between the Academy and the European Legion last Saturday.
Weller was named man of the match as the Academy defeated the European Legion team, 21.11 (137) -6.6 (42) last Saturday, a side that included players from Croatia, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland and Sweden.
Hammelmann was solid up forward as well, while Dawson took some crucial marks in the back line.
Before the squad packed their bags, the rising stars played a tough game against Collingwood’s VFL side, in a curtain raiser to the round three Grand Final rematch between Hawthorn and Fremantle at the MCG.
The Academy squad is currently in Varese, Italy, training at the Australian Institute of Sport’s European base, and will be back in Australia this weekend.
