Queensland school champions to be crowned in AFLQ Schools Cup state finals

The best of the best in Queensland school Aussie rules football will take centre stage on the Sunshine Coast this weekend for the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup State Championships.

Six teams will be crowned Queensland state champions as the 10-month competition draws to a sensational close at the Maroochydore Multisport Complex.

A record 16,269 students from 745 teams have taken part in the 2024 competition; a knockout style tournament which begun in March with localised gala days.

Launched in 2016, the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup is AFL Queensland’s premier schools’ competition. It features a state-wide, interschool format for boys and girls across three divisions: Primary, Junior (Years 7–9), and Senior (Years 10–12).

In its greatest year yet, 2024 has seen significant growth with a 14% increase in participants in the primary male division, while there’s been a 10% rise in regional Queensland schools entering teams.

Friday will see preliminary games contested before Primary State Finals are played on Saturday, and Secondary State Finals are played on Sunday

Teams from Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Ipswich, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast are bound for Maroochydore, while five local Sunshine Coast schools have earned their spots in the finals.

Trisha Squires, Head of AFL Queensland, said she was looking forward to the event.

“We’re thrilled to welcome school teams from across Queensland to participate in one of the largest sporting competitions in the country,” she said.

“2024 has been another remarkable year for the StreetSmarts AFLQ Schools Cup, with a record number of 745 teams taking part.

“I want to extend my gratitude to the Sunshine Coast Council for their support in delivering our state finals and thank our wonderful principal partner of the AFLQ Schools Cup, StreetSmarts, for their ongoing support of this program.

“I’d also like to thank all the students, teachers, parents, coaches, umpires, and volunteers throughout the year who have made the competition possible.

“Good luck to all the teams competing this weekend for AFL school footy glory.
