Queensland sides named for the return of interstate representative football

Saturday 1 July marks the first time in over a decade that Queensland and Tasmania’s men’s and women’s football teams have played an interstate rep clash against each other.

The afternoon’s football double header at the infamous North Hobart Oval will prove to be two of the biggest battles in rep footy.

The Queensland teams have welcomed players from across the state including former AFL and AFLW players. AFLW contracted players competing in the Bond University QAFLW were not eligible to be selected.

The men’s side, coached by former North Melbourne star Leigh Harding, sees former Richmond players Jacob Townsend and Will Martyn take to the field, along with Brisbane Lions VFL players Bruce Reville and Wilson Barry. The side will be captained by Aspley’s Brandon Batchelor.

Other players to watch include Brock Aston from Redland Victoria Point QAFL, who leads the competition in clearances (7.5pg), contested possession (15.5pg), and disposals (38pg); and Connor Stackelberg from Aspley QAFL, who is second in the competition’s goal kicking leaderboard, averaging four per game, and second in the competition for inside 50 marks.

The women’s side, coached by former Lions AFLW midfielder Emma Zielke, is bringing up-and-coming talent to the field with the likes of Ava Seton from University of Queensland, and former AFLW players Selina Priest, Carly Remmos, and Emma Pittman.

Players to watch include Georgia Breward from Southport QAFLW, who is equal first in the Bond University QAFLW for clearances (4.7pg); and Mikayla Martin from Aspley QAFLW who is second in the competition for disposals (28pg) and averages almost a goal per game.

The Queensland women’s Captain is Steph O’Brien, supported by Vice Captain Carly Remmos, both hailing from Southport.

The representative clash between Queensland and Tasmania will be livestreamed on the official AFL Tasmania YouTube.
