Queensland has named its state under 17 squad to take on the Victoria Country side in a showcase match up at Werribee on 13 August.
The game is an opportunity for the selected players to play for a spot in the AFL Futures under 17 teams, who will play in a curtain raiser match at the AFL Grand Final.
The team will be coached by Mitch Hahn, current coach of the Brisbane Lions Boys Academy, with support from James Gellie at the Lions Academy, and Alex Mitchell and Nick Jackson from the Gold Coast SUNS Academy.
Mitch played 181 games for the Western Bulldogs, has been a line and development coach with the Lions, and has coached the Lions VFL team.
He is also a proud Queenslander who played state underage footy for Queensland before being drafted in 1999.
AFL Queensland Talent Manager Mark Browning said, “The selection in the under 17 Queensland team is great recognition and reward for the talent, effort and performances the players have put in so far this season,” he said.
“Some of our best Academy talent will be on show, not only vying for a spot in the AFL Futures team, but for selection in the National Academy for 2024.
“Having the opportunity to play under Mitch Hahn and the excellent coaching staff of James, Alex and Nick, is a chance for players to learn from some of the best in our game, who are supporting them to achieve their ultimate goals.
“The QAFL and our clubs across Queensland play a vital role in the development of our players, and we are grateful for the support they give to each player as well as the Queensland talent programs.”
