Queensland women’s state squad announced

Saturday July 1 is when Queensland’s best-performing senior footballers will have the opportunity to represent their state in 2023 with the return of senior men’s and women’s interstate representative football.

Both Queensland teams are set to take on Tasmania on the famous North Hobart Oval on in a blockbuster double header.

With the countdown well and truly on, the state’s initial 40-player women’s squad has just been selected.

The initial women’s squad boasts an exciting mix of up-and-coming talent and experienced footballers.

Of the group, a number of players competed in the inaugural NQ v SQ women’s match at Southport last year, including North Mackay’s Siobhan Carlton, Cairns product turned Maroochydore key forward Grace Perry, and Coorparoo’s Jess Watts.

While the list features players from all eight QAFLW clubs, AFLW contracted players competing in the league were not eligible to be selected.

This announcement follows the appointment of the men’s and women’s coaching structures, with Emma Zielke leading the women’s side and assisted by Ryan Davies, Rebecca Randazzo and Kieran Daley.

Zielke said she was proud to be leading such a talented and all rounded squad.

“It’s a really exciting squad and I’m looking forward to bringing the group together as we prepare to take on Tasmania,” she said.

“It’s great to see so many in the squad having come through the pathway in Queensland from juniors right through to the QAFLW, who now have the opportunity to represent their state.

“To have senior women’s state football back on the calendar is amazing for Queensland footy and I’m proud to be leading this squad”.

Training will kick off May 31 with the final team to be selected the week leading into the match.
