The popularity of women’s football in Queensland continues to rise with the expansion of the Queensland Football Association Women’s (QFAW) competition.
QFAW Division 2 will now see the competition expand into three divisions: QFAW North, Central and South.
Competition Manager – QFAW & Youth Girls, Joanna Main, said whilst the new structure was focused on reducing the impact of travel and generating more localised content, several clubs did request to align to competitions outside their immediate region in order to create better alignment across their male and female teams.
“The expansion of QFAW Division 2 into three competitions shows the continual growth and demand for women’s football in South East Queensland,” she said.
“Having seven new teams join the competitions, particularly after a tough 2020 season, is an indication that the rapid growth we’ve seen in female football the past 5 years shows no signs of slowing down.”
This season will see the return of Robina to QFAW Division 2 after missing the 2020 season due to COVID-19, while Broadbeach, Burleigh and Surfers Paradise will also add Division 2 teams hoping to underpin their Division 1 success.
QAFL Club Labrador, Redland -Victoria Point and QFA Division 1 Club Mayne will also be entering women’s teams for the first time.
The 2021 QFAW season will commence April 24th, with all competitions participating in the annual ANAZC round.
