The AFL has appointed Renee Williams as the new Chair of AFL Cape York Ltd at tonight’s Annual General Meeting.
The AFL thanks and congratulates John Hollander who held the role of Chair for 17 years.
Renee, a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman, has held the role of Deputy Chair since 2014. She brings a wealth of experience to the role, with an extensive professional background in indigenous health services. She is also Chair of Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service and the Chief Executive Officer of the Torres Health Indigenous Corporation.
Renee said she is honoured to be appointed Chair of AFL Cape York Ltd.
“I feel particularly honoured to be the Chair, and the first, First Nations Chair for AFL Cape York Ltd,” she said.
“I believe in creating opportunities for the future of our young people to grow no matter their socioeconomic status or where they come from, whether that is Cape, Torres, the Gulf or anywhere else in Far North Queensland.
“After 10 years of involvement in AFL Cape York Ltd, I look forward to increasing the opportunities for young people to participate in education, game development and healthy lifestyles for their future, as well as the future growth and direction of AFL Cape York Ltd.”
Head of AFL Queensland Trisha Squires congratulated Renee on her appointment and thanked John for his outstanding service.
“On behalf of the Board of AFL Cape York Ltd, we are delighted to appoint Renee as Chair and excited to see what she will bring to this role,” she said.
“Renee is an experienced administrator, and having served 10 years on the Board, has shown her commitment to AFL Cape York Ltd.
“I would like to thank John for his loyalty to AFL Cape York Ltd over the past 17 years.
“Not only has John strived for the best outcomes for the House and boarders, he has been a strong advocate for Australian Rules Football in Far North Queensland.”
All five other directors of the Board were re-elected for 2024.
