Consistent on field performances, combined with a strong strategy has elevated the Sandgate Hawks’ QFAW Division 2 team to QFAW Division 1, starting from season 2023.
Over the past few years, the Brisbane based club has focussed strongly on growing female participation, providing a clear talent pathway and fostering an inclusive and welcoming culture.
Sandgate put forward their formal elevation pitch in August 2022 to AFL Queensland and on October 10, AFL Queensland’s QFAW Competition Manager Grace Winch was pleased to inform them they were successful.
“Sandgate have a great strategy to continue to build women’s footy,” Winch said.
“They are in a healthy position both on and off the field and I look forward to watching them thrive in Div 1.”
The team’s Coach Ben Long, who was also an Assistant Coach in the inaugural South Queensland Representative Team this year said the girls were feeling excited to be moving into Division 1.
“We are feeling confident and ambitious moving into Division 1,” Long said.
“We aren’t entering the comp to make up the numbers, we are keen to succeed early on and be competitive every week.
“We know it’s a big step up and challenge, but the girls and coaches are excited for what’s ahead.
“We put a Female Growth Plan in place in 2021 which followed on with our planning to build a strong growth platform based on a strong youth pathway.
“We have established Division 1 teams in the U15 and U17 space, as well as having over 15 Lions Academy members and representative players.
“Thank you to our committee volunteers and committee, especially Chad our President who has backed every step of our growth.
“We love and thank every female player for being a part of our club, as well as their families who continue to support us as we grow.
“We want to have the best female footy program in Brisbane for players of all ages.”
The team starts preseason training tonight.
